Let Them Work!
TAKE ACTION!
www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/campaigning/letthemwork/
The MRSN Forum is working with the TUC, Refugee Council and Still Human Still Here to push forward a national campaign to win back entitlement to work for people seeking asylum in the UK.
You can play your part. Support the campaign by:
- Writing to your local MP to ask them to publicly endorse the campaign: www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/campaigning/letthemwork/
- Inviting a Forum member to speak at your local union, school or community group meeting.
- Tell other people about the campaign
- Ask your general secretary to sign a pledge of support
Since the general election 8 Greater Manchester MPs have pledged their support for the campaign and a change in policy. This is a great start but there's a long way to go and we need your help to get there! Please write to your MP or, even better, go to meet them at the surgery. If you're not sure who your MP is you can find out using this website: www.theyworkforyou.com
If you want to meet your MP but aren't sure how or what to say then please get in touch with us. Contact Lawrence at forum@mrsn.org.uk or call 0161 2028916.
Over 20 union general secretaries have pledged their support including Unite, Unison, GMB, PCS and the Prison Officers' Association. Local unions have pledged support after hearing testimony from MRSN Forum members, who spoke of the waste of skills, loss of self confidence and difficulties they have suffered after living in the UK, often for many years, without the right to work and ability to support themselves.
Letting people work helps because it:
- Reduces the burden on the UK taxpayer.
- Benefits the UK economy.
- Encourages people to play a full part in their local community.
- Combats destitution
- Re-skills refugees to offer them a better future.
