Asylum Rights

Campaigns and Advocacy

Each year the Forum runs campaign groups based on the themes of the Refugee Charter for Manchester. We are currently running a consultation with the refugee and asylum seeking communities of Greater Manchester to find out which issues are affecting their communities the most.

Local Campaign for 2011/12

Following the success of our local lobbying of the UKBA (below) we will be moving on to look at other issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers in Greater Manchester, while continuing to monitor the policies and conduct of UKBA North West.

Please take the time to tell us the issues you believe most need to be campaigned on. Ideally this should be something that can be resolved locally, rather than by the Government.

Asylum Rights

The Asylum Rights Group has worked to improve asylum seekers' experience of local service provision in Greater Manchester. So far, much of this work has been focused on reporting and detention processes, involving extensive research into the issues by forum members and lobby meetings with UKBA.

As a result of MRSN Forum negotiations with UKBA the following changes have been implemented:

  • A significant reduction in waiting times
  • The introduction of a monitoring system by UKBA to ensure people feel they are treated with dignity and respect
  • Awareness raising sessions with UKBA run by MRSN and Refugee Action
